The People Behind the Reviews

Research you can actually
trust — and trace.

Our mission: Shoppers make better decisions when the research behind a recommendation is honest, methodical, and transparent. Affiliate commissions fund our work — but scores are locked before links are placed.

Our story

Why we built this

Most review sites are paid-placement directories in disguise. We built something different.

Our Core Principles
Scores before links
Every editorial score is finalised and locked by the review lead before any monetisation decision is made. No exceptions.
AI assists, humans decide
Our AI surfaces patterns across thousands of reviews. A named specialist reviews, challenges, and signs off every verdict.
90-day maximum age
Store quality changes. We re-review every active listing on a 90-day cycle so ratings always reflect current reality.
Full FTC compliance
Every affiliate link, every product received free for review, every AI-assisted section — all clearly disclosed, every time.

Trusted Buyer Report started from a simple frustration: the "best of" lists dominating Google were almost universally pay-to-play. Stores that paid for placement sat at the top. Stores that didn't — even if they were genuinely better — disappeared.

"We believe the single most important thing a review site can do is make its methodology fully public — and then actually follow it."

We recruited a team with backgrounds in consumer journalism, retail buying, and product testing. We built AI tooling to help us read patterns across tens of thousands of verified shopper reviews — the kind of signal analysis that would take a human weeks to do manually.

Then we published our scoring framework publicly, named a human editor on every article, and made a hard rule: no store can pay for a better rating. Affiliate relationships fund us, but they are established after editorial work is complete — never before.

We are still early. But every review we publish is one more data point in the same direction: that honest, transparent research is both possible and valuable.

Review methodology

How every review gets made

A 3-phase process for every store review and buying guide — so you know the recommendation is based on real research, not sponsored content.

Scoring framework
Every store is scored across 5 weighted dimensions. No single criterion dominates. Scores are displayed to one decimal place.
Product Quality
30%
Materials, durability, accuracy of product descriptions vs. received items
Customer Service
25%
Response times, issue resolution rate, real buyer support test
Shipping & Fulfilment
20%
Delivery speed accuracy, packaging quality, tracking reliability
Return Policy
15%
Fairness of policy, ease of actual returns, refund turnaround
Pricing & Value
10%
Price competitiveness, hidden fees, sale accuracy
3-phase review process
Every review follows this sequence — no shortcuts, no skipped steps.
1
Data Collection & AI Pattern Analysis
Our AI engine scans thousands of verified shopper reviews, return-policy documents, pricing history, and customer-service response times — flagging patterns humans would take weeks to spot manually. Output: a structured data briefing for the human reviewer.
2
Human Expert Review & Verification
A named category specialist on our team cross-checks AI findings — testing products, contacting customer support, and verifying claims independently before anything is published. They can and do override AI flags if the evidence doesn't support them.
3
Editorial Sign-off & Conflict Check
Our editorial lead reviews every piece for accuracy, bias, and affiliate-link disclosure. Scores are locked before any monetisation decision is made. No store can pay for a better rating — this step ensures that commitment is honoured.
Editorial independence policy
Non-negotiable rules that govern every review we publish.
  • No store can pay to be featured, ranked higher, or reviewed faster
  • Affiliate links are placed after scores are locked and published — never before
  • Products received for free are disclosed on the review page; free receipt does not inflate scores
  • Every review carries the named editor who signed off, plus the date of the most recent update
  • If a commercial relationship changes, existing scores are re-evaluated by an editor with no conflict
  • Reader-submitted corrections are reviewed within 5 business days and published publicly if valid
Update & freshness policy
Stale ratings mislead shoppers. Here's how we keep ours current.
90
Maximum review age: 90 days
Every active store listing is flagged for re-review after 90 days. A store that was excellent 18 months ago might be struggling today — this cycle ensures our ratings reflect current reality.
Urgent update triggers
Any verified report of a store significantly changing its return policy, ownership, customer-service standards, or pricing practices triggers an immediate out-of-cycle review — regardless of the last update date.
Community signals
Verified community reviews flow into our AI analysis pipeline in real time. A sudden drop in community sentiment above a statistical threshold automatically flags a store for priority human review.
AI ethics

How we use AI — and how we don't

AI is a research tool, not a publishing tool. Here's the exact boundary we hold ourselves to.

What AI does on this site
  • Scans thousands of verified shopper reviews to detect statistical patterns
  • Flags inconsistencies between a store's marketing claims and reported customer experience
  • Monitors pricing history and return-policy changes at scale
  • Generates structured research briefings for human editors to use as a starting point
  • Powers AI Tools (Summarizer, Comparator, Shopping Assistant) — all clearly labeled
What AI never does here
  • Publish a review, score, or recommendation without a named human editor signing off
  • Override or automatically change an editorial score without human review
  • Generate content that isn't clearly labeled with an "AI" badge
  • Contact a store, brand, or advertiser on our behalf
  • Make any monetisation or affiliate-link decision
The AI-to-human handoff
Data Ingestion
AI collects & structures shopper review data, pricing history, policy docs
Pattern Analysis
AI flags anomalies, trends, and conflicting claims across all signals
Research Briefing
AI generates a structured brief — delivered to the human editor, not published
Human Review
Named specialist verifies, tests, challenges, and edits
Editorial Sign-off
Review lead locks the score. Disclosure check. Goes live with named author.

Editorial standards

The rules we hold ourselves to

Publishing standards that cover accuracy, disclosure, conflict of interest, and corrections.

Named authorship, always
Every article, review, and buying guide must carry the name of the editor or researcher who produced it — plus their credentials and the date of most recent update. Anonymous content is not published.
Clear AI labeling
Any section of content written or significantly assisted by AI carries a visible AI badge. There is no "stealth AI." If a section is AI-assisted, readers see it. If it is human-written, no badge appears.
Affiliate link disclosure
Every page containing an affiliate link carries a clear, FTC-compliant disclosure at the top. Links are placed after editorial scoring is complete. The existence of an affiliate relationship is visible on every relevant page.
Corrections policy
Reader corrections are reviewed within 5 business days. If a factual error is confirmed, we update the article, note the correction transparently at the bottom, and log it in our public corrections register.
No conflict of interest
Editors may not review a brand they have a personal or financial relationship with. Any existing relationship discovered during editorial review triggers reassignment to an editor with no conflict.
Accessibility commitment
All published content follows WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines. Images have descriptive alt text. Color contrast meets accessibility ratios. We audit the site quarterly and publish our accessibility statement.
Found an error? Tell us.
We take factual accuracy seriously. If you spot something wrong — a score that doesn't match the evidence, an outdated fact, or a disclosure we missed — please let us know. Reader-submitted corrections are reviewed within 5 business days. We publish a log of all confirmed corrections.
